The placebo effect is a very powerful effect indeed, and rather than speak to the ineffectiveness of certain trial medications, I think it speaks instead to the power of our bodies to heal themselves.
When we are receptive to healing and physical betterment, we heal faster and more effectively because our bodies are working hard to make us better as well. The are literally opening the cellular gateways that accept medication (both those our body naturally produces and pharmaceuticals).
This week, take a few minutes out of the day when you can and think about how good your body is at healing itself. Take this a step further by actually imagining the inner workings of your body making you stronger and healthier.
Don’t worry if this sounds silly to you. Just remember that there’s a reason the placebo effect is one of the most challenging issues for the pharmaceutical industry to overcome and that there are psychological reasons for the colors and shapes of the pills you take, as well as the words and numbers that are printed on them.
To learn about my recent convalescence as well as a bit more on the placebo effect, check out this week’s Fitness For All.
