The feeling of trauma can touch very sensitive nerves, affecting the way we live our lives. As part of a larger physiological response to pain, when we are hurt, whether physically or emotionally, our bodies tell us to stop moving in order to minimize blood from flowing as quickly around the body.
Does this also happen with emotional pain? Of course it does. As soon as we have some kind of emotional pain we usually hide under the covers wishing the pain would go away or become reclusive in some other way.
Here are 3 simple ways to reduce the impact of traumatic stress
1. When out and about, instead of looking down at the ground, keep your eyes peeled above the horizon. Believe it or not, people report feeling happier when they do this.
2. When walking, keep your shoulders back and down, you will feel the difference straight away.
3. While you are sitting in a chair, instead of looking down and hunched over, sit up straight with shoulders back and head up. It is harder to feel sad in this position.
This week, try these three tips even if you aren’t feeling particularly down about anything because they are shown to raise our moods no matter our state.
Most of us don’t initiate our traumas, but at some point we can decide how to deal with them when they happen. Hear about my client who experienced her own trauma and what she’s doing to get through it at Fitness For All.
