This week, practice and repeat these three techniques to protect yourself from injury and improve your body’s performance.
Bend at the knees…CORRECTLY!
How? As you start bending your knees, be sure to push your behind out towards the back of you. That way, you are still bending, however, the weight is on your upper body and not your knees.
Why? By using this technique, your knees will not be holding the weight of your body, so you will not hurt or injure them. Instead your upper body is helping with the weight. It’s very similar to when you sit in a chair. Do the same when you bend down to pick something up or when doing a squat.
Shoulders back and down…ALWAYS!
How? When standing, roll your shoulders back and let them drop down. If you are not used to doing this, it will feel unusual for a while and you will most probably go back to your usual posture. However, over time, by correcting yourself when you sit down, when standing, when preparing food, eventually it will become normal.
Why? When you get to be a grand old age, do you want to be hunched over like you see some very mature people? I certainly don’t! I want my body to feel as young as it can as I age. So from this day forward, hear my voice in your head saying, “Shoulders back and down!”
Breeeeeeaaaaaaattthhhh…PROPERLY!
How? Breath in through your nose (around 3 seconds) and let you stomach fill with air (in other words your stomach should expand) then exhale out through your mouth letting the air release from your stomach, so your stomach should deflate. On exhaling you should feel a vibration at the back of your throat which is very good. It means you are letting all the muscles in your body relax a little.
Why? I think it is very good for all of us to try and relax a little. Let our bodies be calmer. You also can think more clearly when your body is calm. I often do this breathing technique in the car, when I’m in meetings, or when I feel stressed.
