Feeding our lives is about feeding all aspects of our lives, which means giving our bodies the movement that they naturally crave.
That’s why I want to branch out of my regular food-related nourishment discussion and talk about a topic that’s very close to my heart as a Health at Every Size educator and practitioner: learning to rediscover the joy in movement.
I have a very special tactic for teaching people to rediscover this joy, and I’d love for you to try it this week.
When you have a few minutes to yourself, try this simple exercise:
• Turn on your favorite music.
• While standing, begin by paying attention to your breathing. Try to take deep breathes into your belly and notice the sensations in your body – tension, warmth, heaviness.
• Begin to move just one finger to the beat. See how many ways you can make your finger move to the music.
• Allow the movement to extend into your hand and, when you are ready, into your arm.
• With your eyes closed, begin to sway or move your body to the music. Continue to be aware of your breath.
• When the music finishes, relish in the silence. Pay attention to how your body feels after movement.
