Tips

Surely you’re familiar with that feeling of sympathy and empathy for the ill and less fortunate in our communities and for those around the world.  Thankfully, there are numerous charities and non-profit organizations working to better the lives of others - and you can help!

And, selfishly, one of the biggest personal benefits of helping others is how it gets you moving with joy!

This week, I want you to think of a cause you would like to help and how you can go about this. Try one of these three methods:

1. Volunteer: Contact the organization you would like to help and ask how you can become a volunteer in any up-and-coming events that suit your schedule. Among other things, volunteering can include turning urban land into parks, working at a community center or shelter, or answering phones at a telethon.

2. Fundraise: Go online and find ways you can fundraise for a charity you would like to support.  Fundraising is a good way of getting out into your community and talking with people.

3. Participate: And finally, my favorite: participate in a Fun Day Walk or Run.  Contact the charity you would like to support, find out when they have such events that you could enter as a walker or a runner to help raise money for their research and development.  Then put on your trainers and start training yourself for that event.  You will feel so much more rewarded by moving your body for such a worthwhile cause. If your favorite charity doesn’t have a walk or run planned, consider putting one on.

And don’t forget - you can combine volunteering, fundraising and participating.
