What are you up to for International No Diet Day? Do you have plans? Will you be joining a scale smashing? Officially renouncing your diet in favor of a healthier and happier life?
Health, beauty, fitness, one’s worth—none of these things should be gauged by the weight of one’s body. It just doesn’t make good sense.
And just because it isn’t the popular viewpoint doesn’t make it wrong. After all, a lot of people once believed the earth was flat, until they got the right information.
I will dim the lights every time I see or hear any references to Valerie Bertellini, Wynonna, Kirstie Allie, Phylicia Rashad, or the like. I will also light a candle in honor of Mary Evans Young.
I’ve invited our Women’s Studies dept to an INDD picnic in our new women’s studies anniversary grove (it’s just twigs at the moment but it’s quite cute). I’ve been doing fat studies in the dept for 4 years now and slowly people are hearing the message and others are joining the dept who have already heard it. I’ve been wanting to do something every year but have never been around on that date and now it’s going ahead. I’m so excited. It’s lovely to think of all the celebration picnics, bbq and other events going on around the world on that day too!
I’ve invited my local girlfriends to a book launch/INDD party.
There will be lots of yummy food including gourmet cookies & chocolates, and of course champagne!
I’ve arranged all my size-positive books in the living room so guests can appreciate how many and varied they are. There will be a copy of the new food-for-thought pyramid on the wall, as well.
Those are all wonderful plans. I hope that everyone had a fantastic International No Diet Day, celebrating both this important day - particularly what it calls on us to do (or not do) - and the release of Fat Poets Speak.
Hey,
For me No diet day is everyday too, since 2007. But it’s hard to be a non dieter in a society that keeps pushing us to do so. Saying that you’re not on a diet make people assume that you are “lazy”, that you have “no will power” and that you have plans to “overeat every day”.
But the ones who embrace a non diet way of life become more aware that food is our friend and it does not have to be the center of our lives. It’s a long term resolution, but it changes our lives deeply!
So, I think that the mere fact that there is a Non Diet Way is a huge step and I’m very happy today because of that! I’m also gonna celebrate the fact that there is a community like MOMTL that gives support to people all over the world!
Thanks everyone!
Happy No Diet Day!
Rock on, Patricia! That’s an awesome attitude, and I’m so glad to hear that you celebrated INDD this way. I hope everyone else had a great day, too.
Our society certainly doesn’t make it easy, though, you’re right. And so I guess, in celebrating our own freedoms from our culture’s unfortunate attitude towards body size, we can use this day to think about others who we hope will join us in this free attitude.
So it’s a new year and a NEW INDD - what are you doing this year? I hear Marilyn Wann has something big planned in SF. Anyone know what it is? I’m actually going to be out of town this coming Friday and disappointed not to be participating in something bigger.
Please share what you’re doing so I can live vicariously!
I also celebrate No Diet Day every day. For INND, my daughters and I will be having a Girls Night In while Dad goes out w/ the guys to see “Thor”. We will focus on fun and not driving me crazy with Selective Hearing ;0), movies @ home, and ‘girl stuff.’ We just finished our subs and will probably enjoy some ice cream later tonight and then snuggle up to watch a cheezy monster movie of some kind.
