<<<LOST spoilers if you’ve not seen the first two seasons>>>

So, I got hooked on watching lost online. (I was too busy to get into the series when it was on TV.) I’ve really been enjoying the show, but after watching the “Dave” episode in Season 2, I feel like I’ve been sucker punched. Libby is a DISGUSTING, CONDESCENDING, and just plain WRONG person, but she’s portrayed with the soft music as if she’s “supportive” instead of abusive. And, of course, the FatGuy has an eating disorder. It’s not a lifetime of dieting and his genes and the psych drugs and his genes that are why he’s fat—no, ABC has to push the HATE-LIE that fatness is abnormal and has something to do with gluttony.

Dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit.

I’m a little hopeful, since they show the Diet Pusher HateQueen (Libby) as a total wreck in the mental hospital. Do they even touch on the truths of fatness at any further point in the series? Do they keep pushing same-old fat = gluttony BS from now on? Hurley—like ALL fat people—stays fat, but do they keep implying it’s a “choice” or a “failure?” Does Hurley—any anyone else—ever accept Hurley as he is instead of pushing the @)$#%#4 “change” hatred?

In other words, does the series ever get a clue, or should I just stop watching it? I thought it was “original,” but this is just the same old ____.

I love Spiked. They are a renegade news source that doesn’t listen to the common rhetoric and thinks critically about many of the issues. One issue they consistently call shenanigans on is the Obesity Timebomb.

Yes, there are more fat kids than before, they acknowledge, but so what? Show us why that’s so horrible, they cry.

I just really appreciate it when the news gets something right.

UK Study Shows Obesity Epidemic in Rabbits

The results of a national pet health report in the UK conducted by a large veterinary charity, PDSA, show pets in the United Kingdom are in the middle of an obesity epidemic. When compared to cats and dogs, rabbits have the least amount of junk foods (26%) in their diets. However, this equates to over 430,000 bunnies consuming a diet “that includes toast, biscuits, cake, cheese and crisps.” Yikes! This is a long way from a healthy diet of primarily timothy hay, vegetable greens and a small amount of pellets. These thousands of rabbits are at risk of developing obesity related and certainly life-threatening disease if their diets don’t improve. The data from the report came from 11,000 pet owners in the United Kingdom.

Recently a college student created a life-sized Barbie with proportions based on the doll-sized Barbie. Her aim was to spark some meaningful conversation about society’s unrealistic ideas body image.

Carly Hallam posted a hilarious blog blurb about how life-sized Barbie didn’t make her feel better about her body, it only confused her further.

Personally, upon first seeing big Barbie’s photo, all I could think about was how much her back must hurt from carrying all that boob-weight. And the whole 18” waist thing? Puh-lease. We all know Barbie is propped up against that wall because if she weren’t, she’d tip right over.

But you know what? All jokes aside, Carly Hallam might be right. Now that we know what what Barbie “really” looks like, I’m fearful that young gals are just going to start thinking about what meals they’ll need to skip and what kind of plastic surgeries they’ll need to undergo to reach true Barbie beauty.

What do you think?

In this article, I was astonished and disheartened to learn that Big Pharma companies fund a WHOPPING 95% of obesity-related research studies. Oftentimes putting study participants’ health at risk by having them undergo drastic weight-loss diets and procedures in order to produce results that are in their favor.

http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/43218.html

The value of doing your own research before you sign up for any type of medical research study is immeasurable. Always question where the funding is coming from.

Fat Activist to Kellogg’s: “Lose Hate not Weight!”
Creator of original Yay! Scale agrees with taking focus off numbers

5 January, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO, California˜Leading fat activist Marilyn Wann congratulates Kellogg’s for a new ad campaign that tells women not to “focus on numbers on the scale.”

“It truly is not what the numbers on the scale read, but how you feel about yourself that allows you to project beauty and confidence to the world,” Kellogg’s spokesperson Jesper Lund Jacobsen said.

“I couldn’t agree more!” said Wann, FAT!SO? author and creator of the original Yay! Scale, a self-esteem-boosting bathroom scale that gives compliments instead of numbers.

Kellogg’s unveiled a similar scale in Times Square yesterday. In the company’s version, life gains ˜ “confidence,” “sass,” “pride” ˜ depend on losing weight.

“The vast majority of people will regain lost weight within a year or two, according to decades of medical data,” Wann said. “Women of all sizes can feel confident, sassy, and proud right now ˜ without serial (or cereal) dieting!”

Increasing numbers of scientists and medical experts are urging people to focus on health and happiness instead. Good nutrition and exercise habits last longer when they are not part of a weight-loss effort, researchers find. (JADA 105 #6 [2005]: 929-936.) The Association for Size Diversity and Health endorses the approach, called Health At Every Size(SM).

“I care way too much about being healthy and happy to try to get there through weight loss,” said Wann, an international spokesperson for fat civil rights. “It’s not about settling, it’s about celebrating! I hope Kellogg’s next ad campaign encourages all of its customers to eat well and enjoy their bodies. Here’s a slogan they can use: ‘What do you gain when you lose self-hate?’” (The current campaign’s slogan: “What do you gain when you lose?”)

The original Yay! Scale is available for purchase at http://www.voluptuart.com.
