Horizon

Definition: the line or circle that forms the apparent boundary between earth and sky; the limit or range of perception, knowledge, or the like

Consider this...

We often hear that looking forward is better that looking back. I think living in the present requires that we value the experiences and lessons from our past, as memories, while having a vision and attitude to take to the future. And all of this should go towards making the present the best it can be.

Having a vision for the future is the motivating essence of our sometimes mundane days. Looking ahead at the imaginary horizon, where the earth meets the sky, reminds us that anything we want is possible. But is it?

I am an optimistic person. I’m comfortable with my past (even if I made mistakes, I value the lessons) and look forward to what the future holds. Most of the time, I keep my head high, and think that any problem can be managed one way or another. I think that if I want something really really bad, I can work hard enough to get it. This belief in the possible gives me the strength to move forward, try things that may not seem easy, and often get surprising, positive results.

But my optimism has been tested lately. I’ve been feeling out of control about what’s happening in my life and the impacts of these things on my future.

And I did something that is rather out of character for me. I let go of this need to control the possibilities of the future.

I accepted that sometimes I can be out of control. I still look ahead at the horizon, and remind myself that everything will be ok. I tell myself that how I react to what happens in my life is in my control, even if I can’t walk the exact path I initially desired.

So, my advice? Look forward and keep in mind that time will work most things out. Looking at the horizon keeps the endless possibilities for the future in site, and we just have to want our happy place in that future, even if it gets really tough sometimes.
