This weekend my honey and I had saw several independent films at the Waterfront Film Festival in my hometown of Saugatuck, Michigan.
There were several great films that continue to revisit me, nudging me to remember their lessons.
One film, in particular, was especially pertinent to my work with those who have weight and eating-related concerns - and it relates to my post last week about life purpose. The film was One Week.
The movie opens with a young teacher finding out that he has a serious form of cancer and that, even with treatment, may only have weeks to live.
His reaction? Despite his fiancé’s objections, the young protagonist postpones treatment, purchases a motorcycle and begins a soul-searching journey, following the advice on the rim of his coffee cup to “Go West.”
Although the underlying story line is well-known, the film serves as a necessary and poignant reminder. What would we let go of, if we only had one week to live? Would we worry about the size of our thighs or waistlines? Would we obsess over what we’re eating? Or, would we throw ourselves head-first into living, loving and laughing?
What things would you recommit yourself to?
This lesson seems nearly impossible to remember when we get caught up in the daily grind of our lives, but I certainly think it’s something that deserves reflection.
What do you do to stay conscious and aware of your deepest desires for yourself? I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions in the comment section below.
