Peaks & Troughs
All businesses have peaks and troughs, and, unfortunately, in the health and well-being business of body movement, winter months are valleys (for those of you wondering what the heck I’m talking about, I’m in Australia, the Southern Hemisphere, where it’s now winter time).
But am I going to let this deter me from assisting those who need my help in these less comfortable times? I think not!
“I Can’t Make It Tonight”
I’ve noticed of late, as we head deeper into our winter months here, that the following type of phone call has started coming in a few hours before a training session: “I can’t make it tonight, because this or that happened.”
And I just know that, for some of these ladies and gents, the cold weather has gotten the better of them.
But hey! That’s ok. We’ve all done that from time to time: cancelled whatever was pulling us out of the house for a snuggly, warm sofa and hot chocolate (or to relate to you winter folks, for a some ice-cold lemonade and an air-conditioned room).
What is the Comfort Zone?
But what drives us to do this - to cancel activities, especially ones that might be good for us, in exchange for what’s monotonous and easy? I call it the ‘Comfort Zone.’
We all like to be in our Comfort Zones, especially when the alternative, at least in our heads, is a lack of said comfort. The Comfort Zone, as its apt name suggests, is where we feel at ease in our own safe environments, away from all elements of discomfort.
But did you know that getting out of your Comfort Zone can make you a better, wiser, stronger person? Especially when getting out of your Comfort Zone means facing something that is plain good for you - like after having moved your body about for a while!
Facing uncomfortable weather is a minor discomfort when compared to potential major discomforts.
For me, a major discomfort would be having to stand on a stage and speak in front of 100+ people. That’s what I call out of my Comfort Zone. But I know how good it would be for me to overcome this fear because of the benefits speaking in front of a crowd would provide me. I’ll be sure to let you know when this happens.
So this week, get out of your Comfort Zone a little, and wherever you are in the world, move your body regardless of what weather conditions you’re facing.
In the comments, please share with me the times you have gotten out of your Comfort Zone, or what frightens you when it comes to getting out of your Comfort Zone? Also, tell me what your favorite weather-related opposition to movement is that’s not in my big three already!
