More of Me to Love - Home

Please Pass the Practicality

I want to stand up for myself and others like me, others who are defined as “overweight” and “obese” by the prevailing standards - and marginalized as a result. I want fat people from all walks of life not to feel inferior, or “not good enough” because of their weight. As a dietician, this blog will be about my thoughts and musings on this and related subjects. I hope you'll join me and share your thoughts, too.

Life Investment

Well, the main thing I have done in that regard is to keep my meals relatively structured. I do this with healthy prepared meals supplemented by my own choices of snacks for when I am hungry between meals. Sometimes I supplement the meals if they don’t satisfy my hunger.

I still need to work on adding more movement to my life. I really, really need to work on that! I already have the tools to do it. I have yoga DVDs, Zumba DVDs, and Kelly Bliss tapes. I have a recumbent bike. I just have to make movement a routine part of my day. Why is that so hard to do?

Self Investment

I decided to make a big investment in myself recently. I decided to join Golda Poretsky’s Big Beautiful Goddess Academy. I am really looking forward to getting to know the other participants, as well as Golda, of course. I feel like I need to get to a higher level of self-love and passion for life, and I’m hoping that this work with Golda will be just the thing to help me get there.

Clothing Investment

My search for a dress to wear to my son’s wedding continues.

I ordered 3 dresses from Catherine’s, and one from Ulla Popken. I tried all of them on in one day, and was not content with the look or fit of any of them.

The one I liked the most was from Catherine’s. (See photo below.) BUT, it was a little too snug, and the sleeves were not very flattering. I loved the neckline and the ruffles, and the color was not bad.

When I returned the dresses to the Catherine’s store, I saw a lot of casual clothing that appealed to me. I really need more clothing for everyday wear, so I tried on many things. The same old problems occurred. If a shirt was big enough below the waist, it was too big above the waist. I did find one nice lightweight short sleeved sweater, and a pair of knit pants to replace the ones I’ve worn out.

I believe my next step will be to order the ruffled ensemble from Astarte Woman. I seem to have fallen in love with ruffles!

Summertime Sweet Snack

One last thing:  have I ever mentioned Skinny Cow mint ice cream sandwiches? They are quite delicious and creamy, and a wonderful treat on a hot day.

My interest in nutrition developed from the weight issues I had in my youth. My sister and I always tended to be heavier than other kids, and we were teased about it, so naturally I wanted to "fix" myself by dieting. That worked pretty well in my teenage years, but adulthood was much more challenging. I started out as a dietitian who advocated dieting, but due to my own experience with my weight and dieting, as well as my extensive study of the subject of weight management, I have become an advocate of Health at Every Size. The first fellow professional who influenced my "conversion" was Ellyn Satter, who is also a dietitian. I got my Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics in 1975, (LSU) followed by a Master's in 1981(Univ of TN), and a PhD in 1997 (Univ of TN). I have worked in longterm care, public health, and one hospital. For the last 8 years, I have been teaching at the college level. I am the proud mother of a 24 year old son, and have been single since my divorce in 1993. That is when I moved to Atlanta from Cookeville, Tennessee. I moved around a lot in my childhood due to my father's job, but my parents grew up in Texas, and that is where my roots are. I lived in Brazil for 3 years as a teenager, and one of my sisters still lives there.
