What a week huh?
Easter break just came and went like a click of the fingers. Whoa, that went fast!
We went up to the Sunshine Coast (where it rains a lot) and rented an apartment on the beach for Easter. It was absolutely wonderful: the apartment had ocean views, a few minute walk to the beach and a hub of cafes to choose from - just what the doctor had ordered, so to speak.
Staying close to the beach, you really notice how many people get out at every time of the day to do some running, walking, pram walking, or just to use the government-funded outdoor fitness facilities in the park.
The local people in this area are so fortunate to have such a beautiful backdrop to do their fitness training from, with the lovely crystal blue ocean and white sandy beaches to view while walking/running along the boardwalk. As usual, I just couldn’t wait to get out into the ocean, get pummeled by the waves and then take a nice easy run along the seafront.
When you go away on holidays, is that when you move your body less, or is that when you move more, getting out into the environment and exploring what your holiday destination has to offer?
I ask because in my opinion, the things you can see make up so much more of your holiday than just sitting in your vacation destination relaxing. I find myself always out and about meeting new people as I take my son down to the beach. And, because we’re walking everywhere, you get to see so much more and be able to take so much more in of your surroundings. You see a lot more walking than driving even though you may be able to cover more distance driving.
Some people say, “But I like to relax on vacation,” and I certainly agree. But don’t think that getting out and walking around in a new environment isn’t relaxing. Because you have no associations with the place, you don’t ignore your surroundings and let what’s going on in your head dominate your thoughts. The new environment engages you and allows your mind to wonder, and by getting your blood flowing you loosen up your whole body and all of your muscles, making relaxation even more pleasant and enjoyable.
Being on vacation is meant to induce relaxation and get us away from the daily stresses of our lives, even if just for a short while, but consider the benefits of not equating vacation with sitting still.
Next time you are on holiday, get out as much as you can, take more in, and make the lounge chair a place where you can sit to tell everybody about the adventures you went on.
