Safety First
When I’m out training with my clients, not only am I concerned for their fitness, but I’m also concerned about their safety.
If we are walking or running along a busy road, I always make sure that I’m the one closest to the traffic, just in case they trip or stumble. That way, I’m there to keep them safe.
When people are training - and less experienced - they’re often concentrating on information they’ve learned about effective technique, distance covered or any of a number of other important ideas. If not those things, people zone out when they exercise and let their minds wonder. If you do this, it’s important to remember to stay safe at the same time.
Using Your Senses
Obviously I am not going to be out there when you are out on your daily walk, or doing whatever it is you do to enjoy your body’s movement. But, from now on, when you are out and about start thinking about what is surrounding you through sight, sound, touch and even smell. Using your senses when you’re out moving your body helps you live in the moment. And, instead of letting your mind wonder, it lets you learn more about your environment.
When was the last time you touched a tree trunk to see what it felt like? (When I do it, I know the tree has a big smile on it’s face from me giving it a caring stroke).
Be aware of the people around you. Take note of who you can see (e.g. those in front of you) and of who you can’t see (e.g. those just around upcoming corners). You just never know who could be lurking around. Notice the wildlife around you. What do you see?
A Biking Snafu
One day, I thought I would take a nice long bike ride along one of our bike tracks through the wetlands. Very picturesque.
However, for those of you who have not been to Australia, in the summertime we have a lot of wild creatures among us.
This one particular day, I thought I should incorporate some bike sprints, increasing my speed, whizzing around bends, under tree canopies, through long grass, etc.
I came along a straight where I really picked up speed, but because I wasn’t taking particular notice of my surroundings, I rode over a snake very fast. It flicked up in the air behind me and hit me on the back before landing on the ground.
I stopped immediately to make sure the snake was alright. Crazily, the snake was still in one piece and moving! It quickly slithered into the long grass again and out of site.
Fortunately, I was not hurt and the snake, luckily, was not damaged by me running it over.
This just goes to show, when we don’t take in all of our surroundings, some bizarre things can happen. Snakes live in many human inhabited parts of the world, and even though Australia is known for its snakes, this could have happened almost anywhere (though who knows if snakes are that resilient in other parts of the world!).
Take note of your surroundings!
