Hoop the Loop

We are all human, which means we like variety in our lives. Thus, it’s not uncommon for my clients to request a change of scenery and activity from time to time.

As a result, I’ve started incorporating Hula Hooping into our sessions!

Have I ever mentioned how much fun Hula Hooping is? Did you ever do it when you were a kid? I used to love it, and I recently purchased 6 adult professional Hula Hoops for my clients’ sessions.

They come in a variety of sizes, so I bought a few different sizes to suit everybody. Funny enough, the sizing is not what you’d imagine. Rather than being based on body size, it’s based on skill level, with larger hoops for beginnings and smaller hoops for more advanced hula hoopers.

Learning to Hula Hoop

Now to teach people how to Hula Hoop is quite foreign for me, but there are courses you can take to instruct you on how to use a Hula Hoop. I referred to some of these resources online in order to learn more. The first thing I learned was the basic, “around the waist” trick.

Watch this basic tutorial:

So, I’ve been practicing on my own and remembering from when I was a child what to do, and from what the girls told me where I purchased the Hoops from - and from online video instructions. I now have this basic waist move and have no problems demonstrating it to my clients. Excitingly, some have picked it up and others are persisting. The idea is not to give up; keep trying and it will come.

Now it’s time to create more interesting moves, so my clients don’t get bored with the waist Hula Hooping.

There are so many fun things out there. Check out this one:

And with the music it’s such great, fun body movement!

You Tube has an array of beginner lessons and tutorials to watch and practice. As I explore more, I’ll pass the gems onto my clients. As you can see, the internet is very powerful for finding anything that your heart desires - use it to your advantage to check out other fun body movement techniques you may enjoy.

There are great ways other than YouTube to find new and creative body movement techniques. Pick up some regular tips on enjoyable movement just by liking different body movement pages on Facebook. Think of different movements you’ve done in the past and then research where they are now and how you can get involved. Consider things like walking or hiking clubs, Frisbee groups and others. What a wonderful resource that has been created for us to grow and learn more about the world - take advantage!

One more video before I go. Check out these beginners having fun:

I shall keep you posted on how we do with the Hula Hoop, and introduce you to any fun moves I find. I hope this is going to be a winner of an activity because I think it’s so much fun.

Do you like Hula Hooping? What fun activities do you enjoy for body movement? If you have any Hula Hoop tricks up your sleeves, I would love to hear from you.
