Life in the Fat Lane

There are few boundaries to the kinds of material you'll find here, so long as it has to do with the wide and wonderful world of fat. Whether issues in science, health, fat politics, the fat community, information on More of Me to Love or musings on the cruisings of the fat lane, this is a place for shifting gears.

I call it The Noise.

Day in, day out, on TV, on the ‘net, in the news, in magazines, in our homes and workplaces; health care workers, politicians, spouses and bosses, our mothers and our first lady—all incessantly saying a gazillion variations of the same thing: If you’re fat, you’re not OK.

Even when we know all those messages to be false, the insidious nature of this anti-fat barrage sometimes gets to us. (An excellent blog post on the insidiousness—to the point of being believed without question—of The Noise can be found here.) We want it to STOP, but it keeps coming at us, everywhere we turn, wave after wave like the ocean at the shore. The Noise seeps through our defenses, gets under our skin, and we end up feeling bad.

Depressed, angry, irritated, hurt, rattled, doubting our value, losing our confidence. We may want to lash out; we may want to disappear and hide. Whatever our particular reaction to constantly being told we’re not OK, the bottom line is that we’re not happy; we lose our joy, we lose our peace, we lose the quality of our lives.

Noise Reduction Technique

So how can we disconnect ourselves from The Noise without disconnecting ourselves from our lives?

One answer is to strip The Noise of its power. By using various “clearing techniques,” we remove the emotional impact of The Noise. It may still be there, but we no longer hear it—or feel its impact. We clear away the bad feelings, and it’s like creating a bubble of serenity for ourselves.

What, then, is a clearing technique? There are many—you may have heard of some: The Sedona Method; Meridian Tapping (EFT); TAT; meditation; affirmations; etc. All of these approaches more or less clear away the emotional impact of an issue, so that it doesn’t bother us anymore.

All of these methods work for some folks. If The Noise is getting to you, and you are familiar with any of these methods, I encourage you to adapt them to help you release—clear away—the power, the emotional impact, of The Noise.

The Method That’s Working For Me

My own method of choice for quieting The Noise is a clearing process called ZPoint for Peace. ZPoint, developed by a hypnotherapist, uses intention, imagery, a mantra, and simple clearing statements to directly, easily, gently, and safely guide the subconscious mind into releasing the emotional content of uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and memories. ZPoint is deceptively simple to learn and to use, yet people who experience it are often amazed at its power.

As I completed my training in ZPoint and began using it with clients, it occurred to me that here was a wonderful tool that we in the size community could use to counter the personal fallout from the “war on obesity.” War is messy, and Noisy, and harmful, and definitely neither healthy nor peaceful nor joyous. We on the receiving end need an easy, gentle approach to regain our serenity and our joy of life. To that purpose, I have been customizing the ZPoint template specifically to disempower The Noise.
