Is it just me, or do you ever find being a fat advocate exhausting?
It’s not that I don’t believe in what I write here. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the fact that it allows me to reach more and more of you each day.
It’s just that sometimes I get tired of fighting the entrenched system of fat hatred and diet culture that so many corporations spend so much time and money to keep in place. I get tired of explaining myself to everyone from friends to family to former employers. Sometimes I want to just give up and say, “You know what? You’re right. What’s the address of that Weight Watcher’s meeting again?”
Of course, I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to stop writing this blog. I’m not going to stop working with clients. I’m not going to stop speaking out about the dangers of dieting and the problem of fat hatred.
But I’m writing this post to say, it’s okay if you don’t always feel like the fabulous fat advocate that you want to be. It’s okay if you miss an instance to speak up for yourself. We all do it. We all feel like there are times that we’re not completely in our power.
And I truly feel that, like with all things, the more we beat up on ourselves for the way we handled a situation, the more difficult it is to handle that situation better when the opportunity next arises.
I truly believe in being honest about this stuff, so if you know what I’m talking about, drop me a line in the comments.
In the meantime, check out the thoughts of my fellow experts.
